Got a diary packed full of special occasions and absolutely nothing to wear? Dreading the thought of another invitation because you just can’t face rocking that dress to another social event? We know the feeling – and it doesn’t stop at the wardrobe. If you’re guilty of rushing out the door and hastily applying your make-up in the car (we’ve all been there), maybe your pre-going out ritual needs a rethink too. Getting ready is half the fun, after all.
So, to help us amp up the elegance for a night out on the town, we figured who better to turn to for a little advice than blogger and style expert, Victoria of Laugh of Artist.
Pens at the ready… these are the new style rules to live by.
RULE 1: GET CREATIVE
If I'm going to a really special event, I always find out if there's a specific dress code. There's nothing worse than feeling self-conscious because you're over or underdressed. It might be a wedding or a birthday party ... the venue really matters. I'm obviously not going to wear the same thing to a party in a castle or a Michelin-starred restaurant as I would to one in the country or a Paris bistro. Afterwards, they might hold a huge reception or, if it’s a more intimate get-together, I'd feel fine wearing something more relaxed. For a party that's a bit more chic, I would definitely dress up: heels with a skirt or dress, or maybe high-waisted trousers with a blouse. Head-to-toe black ... but I always add one striking piece like a bag, quirky shoes, or a coat.
RULE 2: PREPARE BEAUTIFULLY
I've got several beauty routines but they vary depending on the season and what my skin needs at the time. At the moment, I only use serum + care/day and night cream. I also dab on special eye contour cream. A compact foundation, an anti-wrinkle cream, a luminiser and a lip stain. My top tip? I always use bronzer to define my cheekbones and a good highlighter and blusher.
RULE 3: FIND YOUR ICONIC PIECE
I use my 2.55 Chanel handbag as much during the day as I do in the evenings. It goes with every outfit and adds immediate style. My other favourite piece is my bright green coat, which adds huge impact to all black evening dresses. And for daytime, white trainers add loads of style.
RULE 4: SET THE TONE
I've been using Spotify for a while now. These are some of my favourites:
Right now, I'm listening to:
- 1000 Nights - Frenship
- You belong - The Avener
- Rockabye - Clean Bandit featuring Sean Paul & Anne-Marie
- Wait - NoMBe
- Elle ne t'aime pas - La femme
RULE 5: BREAK THE RULES
I don't really wear dresses much, except in the summer, or sometimes long dresses. For more formal events I prefer to wear a nice white shirt, loose with Levis 501s, a pretty, cinched-in, well-cut jacket and a nice pair of boots with heels.
